The Book: The King of Shirts

On April 20th, 1959 Till Freyer boarded a cargo ship in Venice. He was 23. A German export company had given Till samples of garments and other consumer items, telling the young man to meet traders in Asia and to get them to order products "Made in Germany. Cyprus, Egypt, Aden, Ceylon, Penang, Singapore - it was quite a journey. Many orders were placed. Till was to return to Hamburg to collect his commission. He didn't. He did not want his journey to end just yet. Till had a funny feeling that garments "Made in Germany' were eventually going to be a thing of the past while those "Made in Asia' were going to be in stores all over Europe.

Rather than returning to Germany from Singapore, Till sent a cable, quit his job and thereby forfeited his commission. He spent his last dollars on a ticket - a Cathay Pacific DC-3 flight to Hong Kong, then a British colony with duty free status. At the time, in 1959, it must have seemed crazy for a 23-year-old to turn his back on a steady job in Germany in order to have a look at the garment sector in Hong Kong. In fact it was visionary. Till arrived broke. But he never looked back. He stayed in Asia for more than half a century to trade garments. Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia: Till Freyer witnessed Asia's incredible rise from the 1960s past the turn of the century. His autobiography is about entrepreneurship, garments, guts, bars, failure, friendships, success, disappointment and long working hours.

Today, Till enjoys retirement near Bogor, Indonesia. Some of us are privileged to be able to visit him and to listen to him talk about what it was like to arrive in Saigon after the Vietnam war in search of garment factories that might still be intact. Some of us are able to listen to Till recount his trips all around Asia decades ago. For all others, there is his autobiography to read, a wonderful story and now a wonderful book.

South East Asia Correspondent
